Toulouse defeated Liverpool 3-2 on a wild evening in France.

Following nine changes to the starting lineup from Liverpool’s draw at Luton, the home team’s poor first half performance was rewarded with an early goal from Aron Dunnum.

At the half, Jurgen Klopp made three substitutions: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Mohamed Salah.

However, Toulouse would score another goal through Thijs Dallinga.

Following a bizarre own goal by Christian Casseres, Liverpool pulled back, but Niklas Schmidt’s goal for Toulouse immediately followed.

Diogo Jota put the score at 3-2, and in the closing seconds, Jarell Quansah appeared to have equalized, but a lengthy VAR review disallowed the goal. Ian Doyle ranked the players as follows.

Quansah Jarell 7

Fairly self-assured when in control and facing the challenge, but unfortunate that the opener deflected off him. Unlucky too to have a thrilling late equalizer called off for a handball earlier.

Tsimikas Kostas 4

Extremely subpar when taken out for the first game and unable to contribute much afterwards. replaced.

Five Wataru Endo

Not averse to exerting himself, but occasionally he picked up a booking too soon and got around it. replaced.

Elliott Harvey, 7

Busy, he tried to spark Liverpool’s offense from the right side of midfield and displayed the proper mindset while his teammates struggled in the second half.

Mac Allister, Alexis

Feeling more at ease after being relieved of his number six duties, he attracted attention with some quick, precise passing. Second half saw a return to defensive midfield, which had mixed results but helped Jota score.

6 Ben Doak

A few of his signature charging runs in the first half, and one shot that Restes parried. replaced.

(5) Cody Gakpo

Occasionally frustrated with the referee’s lack of protection, but unable to have a significant effect and virtually invisible in the second half. replaced.

Six Luis Diaz

started off strong even though they were the target of several foul plays and a threat in the first half, but they started to falter after the break. replaced.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (in place of Tsimikas 46) 6 aimed to at least add some pace to Liverpool’s play. Mohamed Salah (in place of Doak 46) 5 took a blow to the head soon after entering the game and didn’t really contribute.
