‘Talented’: Son Heung-Min now praises £14m striker who Tottenham reportedly wanted to sign this summer

Spurs were in the market for a new forward over the summer after losing their all-time top goalscorer Harry Kane.

Ange Postecoglou eventually opted to bring in a more versatile option in Brennan Johnson, with Son and Richarlison playing through the middle this season.

But Tottenham were linked with a surprise move for Hwang Hee-chan. Indeed, The Daily Mirror claimed back in May that Spurs were one of the sides interested in signing the striker.

A move failed to materialise after Postecoglou landed in North London. But Hwang is already enjoying his best-ever Premier League campaign as he’s netted six goals.

Now, Son has singled out Hwang for praise while on international duty with South Korea.

My job is to create space that will allow my talented teammates to maximize their talent,” Son said, mentioning the likes of Hwang and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Lee Kang-in.

“The coach gives us a free rein on the field. He always stresses fundamentals, but we’re free to do our own things within his tactical framework. And having the talent to do that is one of our biggest weapons.”

The £14 million-rated Hwang arrived at Molineux from RB Leipzig last summer. He managed just three goals in his debut season but has found his best form under Gary O’Neil.

Of course, Spurs opted against bringing in another senior striker over the summer as they snapped up youngster Alejo Veliz.

It will be interesting to see if Tottenham revive their interest in Hwang should the forward continue his excellent form.

You’d imagine that Spurs will be looking at a higher-profile signing should they move for another striker given Son’s incredible start to the campaign. But Hwang has impressed this season and can also operate off the left-hand sides.
