The announcement of John Cena’s next post-WWE project has made me very surprised.
John Cena has returned to work in Hollywood, and it’s safe to assume that his days in the WWE are over given his past remarks regarding strikes and his enigmatic messages on social media.
While we continue to await the release of his Coyote vs. Acme movie, the wrestler is currently working on a new streaming TV project.
Even while the idea seems like fun, I didn’t anticipate that Cena would go from picking fights with other sportsmen to striking up conversations with celebrities in the car.
In particular, Roku has approved the series What Drives You, in which John Cena will accompany a variety of celebrities in cars that hold particular meaning for the people who drive them.
The streaming service revealed that the eight episodes that were first ordered will have amusing discussions in addition to each famous guest discussing really intimate matters, with Cena facilitating the discussions on a variety of issues.
What the muscular actor had to say about the next project was as follows:
The car you drive and where you drive it can say a lot about who you are, from your personality type to what you value and prioritize the most.
What Drives You is all about tapping into this and each guest’s unique connection to their car, and a destination close to their heart, as the crux of a candid and wide-ranging conversation.
It’s a great opportunity for me to ride shotgun and learn from some of the world’s most entertaining and inspiring individuals.
Though I wouldn’t have thought of John Cena as the perfect host for What Drives You, it sounds like an intriguing show.
After finishing one of his longest runs in the WWE in a while, maybe a program that doesn’t demand as much physical preparation and intense action is just what he needs right now.
A laid-back performance in safe cars probably won’t affect any responsibility contracts he signed for other movies or TV shows, which have insurance clauses prohibiting the kind of physically demanding and possibly dangerous activities that are anticipated from future WWE events.
Following WWE Fastlane, Cena stated in a press conference that he would not participate in the WWE once the SAG-AFTRA strikes ended since a probable injury would prevent a whole film crew from working while he recovered.
Not to mention that the idea behind vehicle interview shows is a tried-and-true one, with a few successful shows that have appeared throughout the years with a similar concept.
Jerry Seinfeld was a great host for Comedians Getting Cars In Coffee, and Carpool Karaoke appeared to have a fan base for both of its incarnations.
(I still find it unbelievable that James Corden wasn’t even driving for that program.)
I wouldn’t rule out the prospect of seeing the icon emerge at the historic WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia in April, even though it does not seem very likely.
A huge WrestleMania might use Cena as a host or for a brief segment, even if he is unable to compete, so long as it doesn’t interfere with any contracts he may have for upcoming projects.
While it may not be as satisfying as a straight-up match, getting him involved in the excitement is still a nice consolation prize.
There is currently no release date for What Drives You on Roku, but I’m sure additional information and a trailer will be released in the coming months.
While we wait, we’ll keep an eye on John Cena’s future and see if any actions he takes will bring him closer to the ring.
