Everton’s punishment may mark a turning point while Liverpool awaits Man City’s FFP decision.
The Liverpool headlines for Tuesday, November 21, in the morning.
Liverpool and Man City’s rivalry takes a new turn following the Premier League’s FFP penalty.
Following Everton’s 10-point deduction for violating the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules, Liverpool is now awaiting the outcome of Manchester City’s 115 allegations against them.
The Blues, who plan to file an appeal, received the harshest penalty in the history of the league, which may be seen as a turning point for the nation.
While Everton feels they are being made an easy target for their transgressions, the league has been perceived as having responded decisively to demonstrate they do not need independent regulation.
With Chelsea also being investigated for actions during Roman Abramovich’s ownership and Manchester City currently battling 115 allegations of financial misconduct, the Premier League’s response may yet prove to be instructive for teams whether they be Chelsea or their rivals found guilty of financial misconduct in the future.
Liverpool’s focus will eventually shift from Everton’s current situation to a separate, far more significant Financial Fair Play violation at Anfield.
In a less-than-subtle passage of their statement, Everton alluded to the possibility that Manchester City may face a harsher penalty in the wake of the largest points deduction in Premier League history.
Even though City’s alleged infractions occurred some time ago, a reduction of points would give the Reds and other teams a modest advantage in the current rankings.
Specifically, Liverpool was defeated in the 2016 League Cup final and missed out on the league title by two points against their rivals in 2013–14.
Therefore, it just wouldn’t work to propose that Pep Guardiola’s team lose 30 points.
In comparison to City’s 115, Everton receiving a third of that for a single charge would look unfair.
