Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos admits they were punished for their slow start against Rwanda in their 2026 World Cup qualifier, which the hosts won 2-0.

Johannesburg – In the most recent round of Africa’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Rwanda shocked everyone by defeating South Africa 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

Hugo Broos, the coach of Bafana Bafana, acknowledges that their poor start cost them.

“Again, we were not prepared for the game; you lose with eleven and you win with eleven. We lost the opening 20 minutes of the game because we lost duels, were unable to stop Rwanda’s kick and rush, and gave two presents.”

In addition, Broos has demanded that FIFA and CAF reconsider letting games take place at Huye Stadium following their insistence on using an artificial field that is flooded with water.

“It seems incredible that a pitch like this is used for a World Cup qualifier. It’s not feasible. All right, that’s the reality. We’re talking about professional football here, and qualifiers for the biggest professional football competition, the World Cup, need playing on a certain type of field, therefore I believe FIFA and CAF need to be more stringent about where players may play.”

In response to inquiries concerning his choice to play the ball on the ground as opposed to taking an aerial route on the challenging surface, Broos has also commented.

“I doubt Rwanda would be able to play as well as South Africa if you ask them to. The coach makes the decision based on what is best for his team, and today, your coach made a wise decision since he won and we were unable to respond to that for the first twenty to thirty minutes. We had to have dominated the game from the very beginning after that.”

South Africa is in second place in group C after two games, having won one and lost the other. Rwanda tops the group with four points, followed by Lesotho, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe in third, fourth, and fifth place, respectively, with two points, and Benin in last place with one point.
