Unforgiveable error: Newcastle player chastised for failing his country, despite being a “great protagonist”

Everyone expected that Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United would face harsh punishment if it was discovered that he had been placing bets on football games.

This means that many were prepared for the 10-month punishment, but it doesn’t mean the midfield player has received forgiveness just yet.

In fact, Gazzetta dello Sport singled out the Newcastle player on Wednesday, giving him a 4/10 for his time there, analyzing how Luciano Spalletti’s revamped Italy has performed thus far.

The midfielder, who will be greatly regretting his actions, will have to watch his countrymen compete in the Euros from home as he is expected to miss out.

He should have been one of the “great protagonists” of Spalletti’s cycle with the Italy national team, according to Gazzetta, and he would have been “almost certain” of a berth in the squad for the following season.

But the Newcastle player was no longer in his manager’s plans when it became apparent that an investigation would be conducted.

Even though Tonali “hopes to quit the habit” of gambling, the newspaper makes it obvious that placing bets on football games was a “unforgivable mistake.”

They cite Nicolo Zaniolo as an example, who avoided a suspension because he did not wager on his own sport when he was detected gambling.
