Former managers of Sunderland and Newcastle United are vying for the position of Republic of Ireland head.
There are three former North East managers vying to take Stephen Kenny’s place as the manager of the Republic of Ireland.
Keane Roy After Kenny was fired midweek, Steve Bruce and Sam Allardyce are among the favorites among bookies.
The 52-year-old was under scrutiny for three years, and after missing out on qualifying for Euro 2024, it was not anticipated that his contract would be extended. A dull 1-1 tie with New Zealand at home added to the pressure on the IFA to act quickly.
With England under-21 coach Lee Carsley and Celtic icon Neil Lennon at the forefront, the rumour mill is currently in full swing. However, a number of former Sunderland and Newcastle United managers are also interested.
Keane, the former manager of the Black Cats, has previously expressed his desire to rejoin management.
The 52-year-old was Ireland’s assistant manager for five years until 2018, having last managed in 2011. He worked under Martin O’Neill.
He was rated at 15/8 by Paddy Power, third only to Lennon and Carsley. Bruce, a 10/1 outsider who has managed both Newcastle and Sunderland, has already indicated interest in the position earlier this week.
He declared, “I want to get back into football.” “Whether that’s working abroad, as a director of football, as a young manager’s assistant, or in a consulting capacity.
I don’t mind at all because I miss the game. At my age, I think international management would be interesting, but while a manager is in place, I think speculating about the Ireland position is disrespectful.
They (FAI) can call me when the manager position becomes available.
Allardyce is a long shot at 20/1 and another player who overcame the Tyne-Wear barrier in his career.
“Big Sam” has only managed one match for his country, England, and he hasn’t had a job since his brief stint at Leeds United last season.
