The manager of Arsenal, Mikel Arteta, has stated that “freedom of speech” is essential to raising the bar for football referees and has acknowledged that he has addressed an FA allegation that resulted from his outburst following the team’s loss to Newcastle United earlier this month.

The FA officially charged the Spaniard after Arteta called the VAR’s decision to not disqualify Anthony Gordon’s goal in Arsenal’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle “embarrassing” and a “disgrace.”

Despite the possibility of a touchline ban for his remarks, Arteta stated at a press conference on Friday that the ability to freely discuss officiating judgments was essential to the advancement of the sport.

Arteta remarked, “I think it’s good that we are communicating.”

All of us—referees, managers, athletic directors, officials, and you guys [the media]—want to make the game better.

Everyone wants a better game, and in order to have a better game, we must be able to express ourselves freely, respectfully, and constructively. That needs to be promoted; else, you won’t become better.

It’s great that PGMOL is addressing the media and outlining the circumstances. It provides clarity, in my opinion.

Arteta responded that he would stay true to himself when asked if he would speak differently about referees in the future.

“I believe you need to be authentic. You need to be genuine to be a leader.

This is who I am, and you cannot be someone you are not,” he continued.

On Saturday, Arsenal, who are now one point behind leaders Manchester City in the Premier League, will travel to Brentford.

Goalie Aaron Ramsdale will start for the first time in the Premier League since September, according to Arteta, as David Raya is unable to play against his original club because of the terms of his loan.

The manager of Arsenal also stated that he hopes to see midfielder Martin Ødegaard return to action following a hip injury and concussion, and that forward Gabriel Jesus will play despite a hamstring ailment.
