In the 2021 season, Alex Albon acknowledged that he was eager to succeed Yuki Tsunoda at AlphaTauri.
Albon discussed his time away from Formula 1 on the High Performance Podcast.
The Thai driver had a whirlwind first two years in F1 within the Red Bull setup.
After a sensational campaign in Formula 2 in 2018, Alex Albon completed the F1 grid in 2019 when he teamed up with Daniil Kvyat at Toro Rosso, replacing Brandon Hartley.
Within 13 races he had already earned a promotion to the senior Red Bull team, replacing an underperforming Pierre Gasly who switched seats with him for the rest of the year.
But after a challenging 2020 season, he was forced to resign from Formula One, and Sergio Perez was called in to fill the void.
Red Bull kept Albon on as the team’s backup driver, and he performed additional tasks for the squad.
Helping the young Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda get ready for his Formula 1 debut in the seat he had held for the previous two years was one of Albon’s responsibilities.
