Robbie Gould, the former kicker and the franchise’s leading scorer announced his retirement today, following 18 seasons in the

Gould has not played in the league this year after finishing out last season on the

Gould entered the league as an undrafted free agent, spending time with the before working in construction and catching on with the Bears during the 2005 season following an injury to then-kicker Doug Brien.

That was the start of 11 seasons in Chicago, where Gould eventually became a household name, becoming the team’s all-time leading scorer and, at the time of his release, the team’s leader in career field goal percentage.

Gould could at times be outspoken and was critical of the team during contract negotiations, perhaps more openly than some kickers are.

He famously got into a locker room spat with then-teammate Brandon Marshall during the tumultuous 2014 season.

There is an argument that Gould is among the greatest undrafted free-agent signings in team history given his scoring records and contributions to playoff teams, including being a part of the 2006 Champion team.

It was an unpopular move when general manager Ryan Pace released Gould following a down 2015 season.

After one year with the Gould signed with the 49ers and kicked there for six seasons. He finished his career fourth on the 49ers’ scoring list and first in field goal percentage (min. 50 att.).

Let’s all congratulate Gould on a fantastic career and whatever is next for him. He’s called Chicago home and there is little doubt he’ll be seen in local media and around the city.
