With regular season days away, former first-round pick Jakub Zboril one of three waived by Bruins - The Boston Globe

The Boston Bruins have waived defenseman Jakub Zboril for the second time this season.

The 6-foot-1, 197-pound rearguard, who is 26 years old, was also waived immediately before the 2023–24 regular season got underway on October 8.

Jakub Zboril was one of the Boston Bruins’ three first-round selections in a row in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Bruins general manager Don Sweeney obtained two additional first-round picks in a series of deals that included current Bruins winger Milan Lucic. With those picks, the team entered the 2015 NHL Entry Draft with the 13th, 14th, and 15th overall. With the 13th overall pick, Sweeney chose Zboril, followed by former Bruins forward Zach Senyshyn and current Bruins winger Jake DeBrusk, who was taken 14th overall.

Zboril’s waiver waiver is interesting since it means he won’t have to pass waivers once more if the Boston Bruins decide to recall him. Only if they tried to reassign Zboril to the AHL and the Providence Bruins after he was recalled would that occur.

This reads—which hasn’t been verified yet—that, considering the unfavorable trajectory of the 2015 first-round pick’s career with the Bruins, Zboril, his agent Allan Walsh, and general manager Don Sweeney of the Bruins decided to take this action in order to assess NHL trade interest in the defenseman. At the very least, Zboril’s immediate waiver indicates to general managers and the other 31 NHL teams that the Bruins are open to discussing possible trades for him.

In 19 games this season with the Providence Bruins, Zboril has seven assists. Zboril has made 76 appearances in the NHL for the Bruins since joining the league in 2018–19, tallying 15 assists and one goal.
