Most of us were surprised by Ogbo Okoronkwo’s pectoral injury, but what was even more startling was that he sustained the injury early in the game on Sunday and persevered, winning the respect of his coaches and teammates in the process.

Undoubtedly, one of Andrew Berry’s and his team’s greatest free-agent acquisitions this offseason was the signing of Ogbo Okoronkwo. After an excellent but rather underappreciated start to his career in Los Angeles and Houston, Okoronkwo was chosen by the Browns to be a long-term depth addition to this club.

How did he give them the prize? Well, during the first week of September, he made his first tackle of the season against Joe Mixon. He has been an incredible asset to this Browns defense ever since.

Myles Garrett has long yearned for a running partner on the opposing side of the defense, and he acquired two in the offseason in Okoronkwo and veteran Za’Darius Smith.

With 31 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks this season, Okoronkwo is excellent for second place on the team. He has been a terrific asset to this renowned defensive line and a force in the run game. But Sunday might have been the last game of his season. Although the team is still awaiting confirmation, head coach Kevin Stefanski hinted this week that things are moving in the direction of season-ending surgery for his pectoral muscle injury.

This week, the news of his injury was rather unexpected given that Okoronkwo completed the game on Sunday. Nobody realized that he was playing with a pectoral injury, which prevented him from using his arm.Defense coordinator Jim Schwartz commended the pass-rushers’ toughness during his press conference on Thursday.

“Ogbo, who only had one arm, returned and played. God bless him.” Really, while the game was in progress, I was unaware of it. I nearly passed out when I saw the movie and realized he was real. He’s a hard man who fulfilled his role in the plan. He sensed that it was his duty to be present.”

The fact that Okoronkwo persevered despite such a serious injury speaks much about him and the mentality of this defense and team. Nobody wants to disappoint the men in their immediate vicinity.

When people wonder why this Browns team is eight and five, cite this example. No one can explain why this squad is so bad. The amount of sacrifice that a team makes for one another is one of those things that is impossible to measure.

This club must keep playing this way if they are to have any chance of winning a playoff spot in the upcoming weeks and going on a miraculous run, especially if Okoronkwo’s injury results in a prolonged absence.
