Whatever happens, it’s hardly hyperbole to say that Joe Flacco has kept the Cleveland Browns’ season alive. In the injury-plagued Browns season, Flacco is the fourth quarterback to start a game for Cleveland, and his presence couldn’t have come at a better time.

Coach Kevin Stefanski of the Browns remarked, “Joe is a pro.” “He’s an expert in the boardroom. He is a skilled player.

For the first time in the previous 20 years, the Browns are attempting to make it to the postseason. If they succeed, the 38-year-old Flacco will have to take the lion’s share of the praise. Cleveland, which currently has an 8-5 record, would likely need to win two of its final four games (against the Bears, Texans, Jets, and Bengals) in order to make the playoffs for the second time in head coach Stefanski’s four years in the position.

For whatever reason, Cleveland chose to go into the season without a seasoned backup quarterback in case starting quarterback Deshaun Watson was hurt. Before having shoulder surgery that ended his season, Watson only started six games. P.J. Walker and rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson were his backups. Walker had one win in two starts, Thompson-Robinson had three starts at 1-2, and Watson had five wins in six.

It wasn’t until November 20 that Browns officials felt compelled to sign Flacco, the MVP of the 2012 Super Bowl while playing for Baltimore. During his two starts for the Cleveland Browns thus far, an important 31-27 victory over the Jaguars last Sunday and a 36-19 loss to the Rams, Flacco has completed 49 of 89 passes for 565 yards, five touchdowns, two interceptions, and an 83.8 passer rating.

Flacco completed 26 of 45 throws for 311 yards and three touchdowns in the victory over Jacksonville. Considering that Flacco only made two starts in an NFL game in almost a year (since January 1, 2023, for the Jets), those stats are even more remarkable.

Remarkably, Flacco did not receive a call from an NFL team during the entire previous offseason or the first two and a half months of this season as a free agency. It wasn’t until November that the Browns extended an invitation to him for a workout.

During Flacco’s workout, Stefanski remarked, “Looked like I’m sure he looked all his life.” He tossed the ball well and appeared in excellent shape. That, in my opinion, is a credit to him for being prepared for the full year.

Not only did Flacco’s fitness excite Browns officials, but so did his attitude.

“He’s very genuine,” Stefanski remarked. “He is who he is. He’s not attempting to emulate anyone else. He’s just being who he is. I believe that his teammates take that to heart, and he puts in a lot of effort.

From being unemployed to playing quarterback for a club attempting to secure a postseason berth, Flacco has adjusted to his new role with ease.

He remarked, “Obviously, it feels good when people seem to have faith in you.” “I’ve been in a lot of locker rooms, but no matter where you go, you still want to win everyone over. Until you can go out there, win, and keep doing it every day, you don’t really know if you have that respect.” Thus, it feels fantastic to go out there and defeat Jacksonville. We seem to be making a lot of progress, in my opinion.

Wyatt Teller, the right guard for the Browns, stated that Flacco has done a nice job leading the offense and blending in.

Teller declared, “He’s a really good quarterback.” “Do we forget that last year, in a game against Joe Flacco’s Jets, we were leading by 13 points with 20 minutes remaining, and Joe Flacco defeated us? In addition to being a superb quarterback, he can memorize the playbook. He is an actual vet. Clearly, he is leading by example, and he throws the ball beautifully.

Following the Browns’ 31-27 victory over the Jaguars, Doug Pederson, the coach of the Jaguars, expressed his admiration for Flacco’s play.

Pederson described him as a “veteran guy who has played a lot of football.” He’s played a great deal of football. He has some excellent players at his disposal to pass the ball to… That he is still performing at this level this late in his career is not surprising.

This is encouraging for the Browns, who will need reliable quarterback play to get through the remainder of this injury-plagued season. The fourth quarterback the Browns have faced this season will take the field against Chicago on Sunday in their next test as they attempt to take a step in the direction of saving their season.
