ties it twice in the third with a goal and an assist for Boston; New York’s winning run comes to an end at four.

ELMONT, New York Friday night at UBS Arena, the Boston Bruins defeated the New York Islanders 5–4 thanks in part to a goal and an assist from David Pastrnak, who also scored in the third round of the shootout.

For the shootout victory, Pastrnak defeated Ilya Sorokin glove side with a wrist shot from the low slot.

Three times, including twice in the last ten minutes of the third period, the Bruins rallied to tie the game.

Boston goaltender Linus Ullmark remarked of his team’s tenacious effort, “Well, it was long overdue.” This is one of the things we had the previous year, and this year we have been working toward and developing it. And if you simply keep at it, it will eventually come in games like this one. We took that action.

For the Bruins (19-5-4), James van Riemsdyk and Morgan Geekie both had a goal and an assist. Ullmark stopped 33 shots.

Boston coach Jim Montgomery remarked, “We felt like we were going to push right to the end.” “We had no idea whether or not we would be able to tie it up. Because of the bench’s mentality, I consider that to be the biggest victory of the year. I had never felt such intensity and emotion, and everyone seemed to believe, until now.

The Islanders (14-7-8) saw the end of a four-game winning streak, but Bo Horvat scored a goal and provided two assists to help them extend their point streak to eight games (6-0-2). Sorokin stopped 30 shots.

“We played a great hockey game, no doubt about it,” Islanders captain Anders Lee remarked. “The shootout just doesn’t go our way. Regroup now, and take pride in our accomplishments.

At 16:51 in the third, Mason Lohrei scored his second NHL goal to force overtime and equal the score 4–4 for the Bruins. Lohrei did this by bouncing the puck off Sorokin’s back and into the net from below the goal line.

To be honest, Lohrei claimed not to have seen it enter. “I just watched Brad Marchand start to celebrate up front.” I simply joined the frenzy. The ball entered the goal. There was a great deal of confusion, and then I entered the corner. I figured we could just toss it to the net and hope for a whiff since I knew Pastrnak was leading, but apparently it went in.

After two crazy periods in which the Islanders led only to have the Bruins level the score, Lohrei’s goal put an end to it.

Five minutes into the third period, Horvat beat Ullmark blocker side from the slot, giving the Islanders a 3-2 lead. Mike Reilly fed Brock Nelson a behind-the-back point feed inside the right face-off dot, and Nelson found Horvat in the bumper position.

At 10:48, Van Riemsdyk used a power play to redirect a Kevin Shattenkirk point shot, tying the score at 3-3.

At 12:01, Nelson capitalized on a failed Horvat attempt from the low slot to give the Islanders a 4-3 lead on the power play.

Alexander Romanov gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 1:42 of the second period with a wrist shot, glove side, from the top of the left circle following a drop pass from Mathew Barzal.

At 13:26, Simon Holmstrom completed an odd-man rush with Jean-Gabriel Pageau to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead. Holmstrom scored blocker side after deking from backhand to forehand while playing alone.

At 14:45, Geekie scored on a power play after Ullmark denied Holmstrom a short-handed opportunity, cutting the Islanders’ advantage to 2-1. From the slot, he completed a Van Riemsdyk pass.

Montgomery remarked, “We get a power-play goal, and we’re back in it.” We weren’t accomplishing anything offensively after the first five minutes, so we needed the power play to pick up steam. After that, we began to sense a slight rhythm and supported the puck by letting it hang on for a little while.

At 17:26 of the second period, on a power play, Pastrnak scored a one-timer past Sorokin from the left dot following a cross-zone feed from Shattenkirk to knot the score 2-2 for the Bruins.

Coach Lane Lambert of the Islanders stated, “We played well, for the most part.” “Three power-play goals were allowed by our penalty kill. Thus, that essentially accounted for the game’s differential.

NOTES: Horvat has scored fifteen points in nine games (six goals and nine assists). That equals the career high he set in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks the previous year. … Barzal has nine points (three goals, six assists) in his last five games. .. Geekie has four points over a three-game run—two goals and two assists.
