Vikings continue to use Mullens at quarterback

Who will Vikings start at quarterback?' and more questions for after the bye

The Minnesota Vikings won their hard-fought overtime game against Cincinnati on Saturday, so they are sticking with their current quarterback.

On Monday, head coach Kevin O’Connell declared that Nick Mullens would start for the second time in a straight on Christmas Eve when Detroit visits Minneapolis.

After entering the game late in the Las Vegas game and guiding the offense to its lone points of the contest, Mullens was handed the starting job against the Bengals. He completed 26 of his 33 throws for 303 yards and two touchdowns in his season’s opening start. Nevertheless, in overtime, he was stuffed on a quarterback sneak and he threw two poorly timed interceptions.

The Vikings dropped to 7-7 after the loss, and although they are still in the running for the playoffs, they are now tied with the Rams and Saints and only one game ahead of many other teams. Because of this, the last three weeks of the season are crucial because they all feature divisional matches.

The Vikings will play the Packers on Sunday night on New Year’s Eve after hosting the Lions on Sunday. The season will conclude in Detroit on January 7.

The Vikings’ defeat on Saturday also put them three games behind the Lions in the division. This means that in order for the Vikings to win the division, they would also need to defeat Dallas on December 30 in addition to defeating Detroit twice in three weeks.

With the official opening of his 21-day practice window on Monday, the organization is also hoping to see veteran linebacker Jordan Hicks return shortly. Since requiring emergency surgery for compartment syndrome following Minnesota’s victory over New Orleans on November 12, he has been sidelined.
