This Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, the Detroit Lions have the chance to accomplish something exceptional, and most NFL journalists nationwide believe they will.

In their Week 16 encounter, the Lions will play the Minnesota Vikings, one of their bitterest rivals, for a chance to earn their first division title in thirty years.

Writers believe that the Lions, with the division in their sights, won’t pass up the chance to bring holiday pleasure to their devoted and faithful fan base. With a wealth of weapons at his disposal and a Pro Bowl quarterback in Jared Goff, Detroit has the third-best offense in the league going into the matchup on Sunday. Goff is expected to surpass 4,000 passing yards, and David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs together will likely amass 2,000 rushing yards this season.

In addition, the Lions are fresh off a dominating 42-17 victory against the Denver Broncos on Saturday. They produced a lot of great plays on both sides of the ball during that contest.

The Vikings, who have used four different starting quarterbacks so far this season, have struggled with consistency. It’s a major factor in the authors’ pessimism about their chances of winning this game as well as the next two, one of which is also against the Lions. Here are some predictions from NFL writers throughout the nation ahead of Sunday’s game.

In Kyle’s opinion, the Lions

“If you’re heading to Minnesota, don’t forget to include the champagne in your suitcase. Absolutely, the Vikings’ defense is sound. They might cause Jared Goff some trouble because of their special blend of Cover 0s and eight-man drops, which isn’t seen in the NFL. After all, they have for a plethora of others. However, Nick Mullens is starting for the Vikings at quarterback, which should give the Lions defense yet another chance to improve, as Detroit can run the ball on practically anybody. Simply put, they outperform Minnesota and are healthier where it counts most. They won’t flinch when a division title is within grasp.

Ben’s pick: the Lions

This year, the Vikings have used four different quarterbacks. Even though the Detroit Lions are favored in this game due to their incredibly skilled pass catchers and superior defense under Brian Flores, it’s difficult to support them. With their adaptable offensive, they should be able to get enough going while keeping Nick Mullens and his attack in check. For their first division title in thirty years, give me the Lions, 27-10.

USA Today

Lions will win, mostly.

With a decisive victory over Denver last week, the Lions resumed their winning ways. The third-ranked offense in Detroit has quick movement of the ball down the field. Amon-Ra St. Brown’s 1,175 receiving yards rank fifth in the NFL heading into Week 16, David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs are both moving close to 1,000 rushing yards, while quarterback Jared Goff is over 4,000 yards from the snap. The Lions ought to defeat the Vikings by a minimum of two touchdowns.

Forecast: Vikings

With a victory in this game, the Lions can secure the division. It won’t be simple. Although the Vikings defense struggled mightily against the Bengals the previous week, I believe it will improve this time. In an effort to slow down the offense and stay in the game to win it late, the Vikings will go after Jared Goff.

Lions, I predict

“We predict the Lions to win because they appear to be a dangerous team and have the opportunity to secure the NFC North.”

Los Angeles Times

Lions, I predict

“Last week, the Lions scored 42 points and seemed like themselves again. The Vikings defense has played rather well, but they have lost three of the last four games. Game of division, thus it ought to be tighter.

The Athletic News

Lions, I predict

“With a win over the Vikings, the Lions can secure their first NFC North title. It has nothing to do with Jared Goff’s home-and-road splits. It concerns turnovers. Detroit is 8-1 when there is just one turnover in a game, while the Vikings, with Nick Mullens, their third-string quarterback, have a -6 turnover differential when facing that Detroit pass rush.
