WINGSThe Daily: Should the Red Wings Have Six Goalies? Is Elvis On The Trading Block?
It is a fact that in the NHL, having two excellent goalies is sometimes insufficient, while having five is occasionally ideal. That was undoubtedly the case in Detroit on Tuesday when Michael Hutchinson, the general manager of the Red Wings, was brought to the mix as a sixth goalie.
The injuries to Alex Lyon and Ville Husso made the change necessary. One of Yzerman’s offseason goals was to ensure he had enough goaltender depth to handle both Detroit and Grand Rapids this season, which is why Hutchinson was in Grand Rapids. Before Alex Nedeljkovic arrived, the Griffins’ goaltending in 2022–2023 was unreliable.
Yzerman is unrestricted by the Red Wings’ current six goalies on contracts (Husso, Lyon, James Reimer, Sebastian Cossa, John Lethemon, and Hutchinson). Husso and Lyon are contracted through the end of the following season, while Hutchinson, Reimer, and Lethemon have one-year contracts. The team’s best goaltender prospect, Cossa, is now on his rookie contract.
Besides, nothing can be ruled out. This season, Detroit’s goaltending has been mediocre at best. Yzerman would make a move if he thought it would improve his goaltending.
Speaking of goalies, Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Insiders recently conjectured that if the Columbus Blue Jackets’ season doesn’t improve, they would consider making Elvis Merzlikins available. He would enter a goaltender market that already had Jake Allen of Montreal.
The Red Wings have signed NHL veteran goalie Michael Hutchinson because they believe that injured goalie Ville Husso will be out for a few weeks. Under an AHL contract, he has been playing with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Dylan Larkin, the captain of Detroit, expressed his embarrassment for the events against the Ottawa Senators. He also discussed his concerns with the NHL’s rules on what is and isn’t safe to wear on the ice. As a player, it’s a little frightening, Larkin admitted.
Tale of the paywall: Tim Robinson explains how Antti Tuomisto’s development was impeded by a shoulder injury in Grand Rapids. He’s now prepared to demonstrate his abilities.
For the Red Wings, Alex DeBrincat’s goal-scoring slump has ended, which is a much-needed early Christmas gift.
