Broncos OT Explains Locker Room’s Real Perspective on the Payton/Russ Scandal

Russell Wilson is “nobody takes more s***” when it comes to the media, according to Mike McGlinchey.

Last Sunday at Ford Field, during the Denver Broncos’ 42-17 loss to the Detroit Lions, head coach Sean Payton launched an enraged diatribe at Russell Wilson from the sidelines. The cliche went viral and persisted throughout this week’s Broncos game preparations against the New England Patriots.

Wilson discussed Payton’s dressing down at the podium on Wednesday for the second time in the incident’s history. The seasoned quarterback doesn’t give the outrage or conspiracy theories any thought, even if he reads and hears about them.

Wilson grinned and replied, “To be honest with you, I don’t really try to pay attention to it.” “I was there.”

Wilson and Payton downplaying the event is one thing. From two astute, knowledgeable NFL operators on leadership and public relations, you would anticipate nothing less. How Wilson’s teammates perceived that sideline scenario would be a genuine tell.

When asked if Payton’s outburst at Wilson has had an impact on the players in the locker room or if it’s a sign of something bigger, Broncos right lineman Mike McGlinchey responded in the affirmative.

“It has, in my opinion, been greatly exaggerated. Things like that do occur, particularly in a huge game for us with a lot at stake, McGlinchey stated on Wednesday from his locker, as reported by Denver Sports’ Andrew Mason. “I believe that Russell and Sean, in particular, are two of the most competitive people you will ever meet. Their competitiveness stems from irritation with things that go wrong, disagreements, or other issues. I don’t think anyone in this locker room is considering it a problem, and they shouldn’t because I can’t even begin to count the number of times a coach has yelled at me or became angry because I wasn’t performing my job properly—mistakes happen. People also become emotional, particularly when you’re getting kicked in the fourth quarter of a game. Therefore, neither I nor anybody else in this locker room would consider anything suspicious.”

Wilson, McGlinchey, and Payton, for one, would prefer to forget about the unpleasant incident that was caught on camera and concentrate on Bill Belichick’s Patriots visiting Empower Field. However, some go over the top and get sensationalized, which regrettably can cause a team to become sidetracked.

“I think the biggest thing is, we’re focused on beating New England and playing a good game against them,” Wilson stated. “Obviously, this game matters, and that’s really where our head is.”

Leadership is essential to a team’s ability to stay on track in the face of such diversions. The Broncos have plenty of that in Payton and Wilson. Add a seasoned right tackle like McGlinchey, who has participated in numerous high-stakes games as a professional, and the cumulative reaction from Denver’s management suggests that a.) there is no internal problem, and b.) the Patriots, not a trending human interest story, are the focus of the Broncos.

Despite the fact that McGlinchey and Wilson are wearing the same uniform for the first time, they have a lengthy history as NFC West rivals. Wilson’s Seattle Seahawks and McGlinchey’s San Francisco 49ers have been in a divisional rivalry for years. That history, along with the fact that he has worked with Wilson this season, has given the right tackle complete faith in his quarterback and his ability to respond to both last week’s potentially disastrous loss and this ongoing narrative.

McGlinchey said of Wilson, “He’ll respond the way he always has, which is with success and grit and toughness.” “Russell is among the toughest people I’ve ever met, especially in this sport, in my opinion. It goes without saying that no one takes more s*** than he does. I believe that two and a half months ago, you all would have laughed at us for our ability to consistently rise above it, lead our football team, and prepare as he always has, all of which have helped position us for a postseason run. There are still three games to play. Russell will compete fiercely and put us in a position to win games by doing what he does best.”

Similarly to one of his predecessors in Denver who also wore the No. 3, Wilson is, in fact, the target of an excessive, disproportionate amount of hate and abuse. Wilson’s remarks, actions, and performance from the previous year may have contributed to some of that, but none of it matches the degree of hatred and unfavorable attention he faces. McGlinchey knows it, and he’s not alone among his Broncos teammates in realizing that.

After a while, one has to wonder why Wilson’s experiences in Denver with the media and fans are so comparable to those of Drew Lock, who now receives his paychecks from the Seahawks. I believe it has to do with the reputation of being a quarterback for the Broncos and how it affects a player when things aren’t going well.

Playing “the most important position in sports” carries a certain amount of strain and criticism. And then there’s being a Denver Broncos quarterback.

Even though Payton’s influence was clearly beneficial to Wilson’s play earlier in the season, the quarterback was once again made fun of by the national media as the Broncos struggled to a 1-5 start. Amidst the Broncos’ five-game winning streak, all those boo-birds and detractors faded into the background like the iconic Homer Simpson meme.

The Detroit loss last week and the high-profile sideline altercation demonstrate how easily media clichés can be adapted and how certain local and national talking heads and columnists take pleasure in Wilson’s financial turnarounds. The same is true for Payton, albeit to a lesser extent, primarily due to his blunt and uncompromising demeanor at the podium and the way the media interprets his interactions with the press. It’s unfortunate.

Returning to form and winning a football game is the greatest way for Payton and Wilson to quell the criticism. The Broncos’ loss last week was regrettable because it took away their ability to decide whether or not to make the playoffs. However, with a 7-7 record, they still have a decent opportunity to make it to the NFL tournament if they win out and end 10-7.

For a while, the media’s knives will be put away if the Broncos defeat the Patriots. However, since Wilson was acquired via trade last year, if there’s one thing we’ve learned it’s that the anti-Russ media types are faster to latch onto a story than anyone else.
