The Los Angeles Chargers made a surprising move on Friday, releasing a team captain just a day before they took on the Buffalo Bills. Per NFL insider Ari Meirov, the Chargers have released defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day.

Day, a former sixth-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, signed a three-year, $24 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022. He played in 16 games during his inaugural campaign with the AFC West club, tallying 56 tackles, nine TFLs, six QB hits, an interception, and a forced fumble. He picked off Denver Broncos gunslinger Russell Wilson in the season finale. Joseph-Day played in all 14 games this season before his release. He registered 31 tackles, three TFLs, and 11 QB hits during that span.
Joseph-Day began his career with the Los Angeles Rams, playing three seasons for head coach Sean McVay. He had 44 tackles as a rookie, including two sacks. He posted 55 tackles in 2020 before registering a career-high three sacks in 2021. Sebastian Joseph-Day is a Super Bowl champion, winning with the Rams that season.

Los Angeles Chargers: Amid Nightmare Season
The Los Angeles Chargers are fresh off a 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, allowing the most points in franchise history. The fallout was massive, with head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco getting canned. Staley lasted just two seasons with the club, going 24-24 and failing to win a playoff game despite the team dishing out massive contracts on defense. He also struggled to develop a winning culture with franchise quarterback Justin Herbert at the helm.
Herbert has thrown for 114 touchdowns and 42 interceptions across four NFL seasons. Herbert has won AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, earned MVP votes, and received a Pro Bowl nod, but the Chargers have just one double-digit winning season with him under center.
