Ohio State’s latest 5-star quarterback has a chance to accomplish something never done before: Buckeyes Recruiting

Columbus, Ohio The head coach is ecstatic about Air Noland, the sixth five-star quarterback Ohio State has ever signed and the third in the Ryan Day era.

The newest iteration of the Buckeyes needing to reenter the recruiting trail in search of a quarterback after their first choice fell through is the nation’s No. 36 player and No. 4 quarterback. There is a great deal of hope that Noland will follow in the footsteps of the other Plan Bs who have succeeded on the recruiting trail, such as Dwayne Haskins in 2016 and C.J. Stroud in 2020.

“There are a lot of twists and turns along the way with recruiting the way things are now,” Day remarked. “Even five, six, seven, or eight years ago, there would be a committal and nothing more. Now, there will be detours along the route for a variety of reasons; you just need to navigate them and choose who is the ideal man for you at that particular moment. Next, complete your 85.

Day and Corey Dennis had to find a replacement for five-star quarterback prospect Dylan Raiola, who decommitted last year and later signed with Nebraska after flipping to Georgia. They looked at a few possibilities before settling on Noland. They were initially drawn to the five-star prospect because he was an efficient thrower who could make all of the throws.

This was demonstrated in his junior year, when he led Langston Hughes High School in Georgia to an undefeated record and a state championship by completing 73.1% of his throws for 4,095 yards and 55 touchdowns with just four interceptions. In his final year, he achieved 2,190 yards and 22 touchdowns after that.

Day remarked, “We saw the athleticism in his film.” “He’s just really cool out there.” putting on numerous plays. He is the state champion. We spent some time there and got to know him as he was Jelani Thurman’s high school teammate and current Buckeye.

The time they were able to spend with Noland—during visits to Columbus or when staff members went to meet him—illustrated another crucial quality Day looks for in his quarterbacks: The starting player for OSU is frequently the program’s public face and garners attention around the state that is likely only surpassed by LeBron James.

That kind of prominence carries a great deal of responsibility, and only a unique individual can rise to the occasion. His ability to run a locker room and the way people around the quarterback talk about him are usually the first signs that he is doing so.

“Everyone in the neighborhood, the school, and the coaches talked about what a great player and leader he was, and when you talk to him, it doesn’t take long to recognize how mature he is in his approach,” Day stated. It’s largely composed of that. We think he’s got a pretty high ceiling when he comes here, and we simply love that part of it. eager to collaborate with him in the near future.”

With all the qualities Day seeks in a quarterback, Noland is bringing those qualities into a room where a new first-string quarterback is being considered. That’s what sets him apart from the other five-stars who entered the program right out of high school.

The five-star quarterbacks Ohio State signed:

Player, Year, State, Rating, and Record as a debutante
Ewers Quinn, 2021/22No. 1 Texas (No. 1 QB) 1.0000 N/A
Pryor, Terrelle (2008)No. 2 (No. 1 Dual) Pennsylvania 0.9997 31-4
McCord Kyle (2021)No. 28 in Pennsylvania (No. 6 QB) = 0.9858 12-1
Miller, Braxton (2011)Ohio No. 30 (Dual No. 2) 0.9847 26-8
Zwick, Justin (2002)Ohio 0.9843 5-4 Ohio No. 45 (No. 3 Pro)
Noland Air, 2024No. 36 (No. 4 QB) in Georgia = 0.9835 TBD
When Justin Zwick came in 2002, he was never going to start as a true freshman. That was before players could play four games and still receive a redshirt, so he worked behind the scenes for a team that, with Craig Krenzel, went on to win the national championship.

When Terrelle Pryor came in 2008, Ohio State quarterbacks had not generated as much buzz in a long time. However, he was also returning for another season to join a squad that had recently advanced to the national championship game, led by Todd Boeckman. Jim Tressel had no intention of starting Pryor, but after a few defeats, he was able to refocus on what was best for the long term.

2011 saw Braxton Miller emerge as Pryor’s backup, but Pryor’s decision to enter the NFL rather than serve a ban caused a stir in the off-field tattoo issue. Even so, Miller started the first day of competition behind Joe Bauserman.

Quinn Ewers’ entire circumstance was peculiar. He never really was a horse in the race, showing up six months ahead of schedule after graduating a year early. The only person who has never begun a game is him.

Challenging Jack Miller and C.J. Stroud for the starting job, Kyle McCord arrived in the spring of 2021 with the best chance. However, such prospects remained remote because Stroud appeared certain to succeed Justin Fields from the minute he arrived on campus in 2020, and that proved to be the case.

That’s the lineage of five-star quarterback recruits that Ohio State signed.

Only two managed to start for multiple seasons, and even those were marred by the fact that Pryor’s tenure was controversial and Miller’s career as a wide receiver was cut short by injury.

McCord had the opportunity to start for several years, but he decided to go to Syracuse instead.

Regarding the other two, Ewers completed the program in four months, and Zwick was subsequently replaced by Troy Smith—a record-breaking Heisman Trophy winner—in his position.

There’s a potential that Noland will be distinct from the five that came before him. Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz, the players he will face, have combined for fewer than 200 plays and only one start.

The idea that a five-star recruit might manage to land the starting position is not absurd.

Day remarked, “You don’t know until they get here.” The first factor to consider is how quickly they pick up on the offensive, adjust to it, and grow from their errors. Experience is irreplaceable, but with certain individuals, you can tell right away. They are capable of managing the data. They are capable of handling it.

Noland has the opportunity to be the five-star quarterback who led Ohio State football into the next era by establishing his presence on the field from the first play and never letting up.

Day remarked, “Most guys need some time to figure that out.” “Many guys are nervous and think it sounds fantastic to walk in and play straight immediately. However, in terms of their development, that isn’t always the ideal option. However, every guy is different, and once spring practice begins, we have a better notion.
