What Ohio State’s Ryan Day expects from Kyle McCord at Syracuse after quarterback’s transfer
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ryan Day believes Kyle McCord will succeed at Syracuse after the starting quarterback’s surprising decision to leave Ohio State football.
Day made his first public comments since his 2023 starting quarterback entered his name in the transfer portal during his National Signing Day press conference. Earlier this week, McCord committed to play his final season at Syracuse.
Day did not expound on any discussions he and McCord had prior to the split or whether Ohio State could have repaired that situation.

“Kyle was very well-respected here,” Day said. “Wish him nothing but the best. He played some good football here. He spent three years here and made a lot of relationships here.
“I think he’s committed to another school now, and he’ll do well there. He will.”

The last time Day spoke publicly about McCord — on Selection Sunday, eight days after a regular-season ending loss to Michigan which relegated OSU to a playoff afterthought — his words carried a noticeable lack of conviction. What he could not yet say publicly was he already knew McCord might leave the program.
That happened the next morning, in the early hours of the opening of the winter transfer portal window.
McCord threw for 3,170 yards with 24 touchdowns against six interceptions and led Ohio State to an 11-1 season. While that production ranked him among the top 15 quarterbacks in the country in passing efficiency, it fell short of the standard set by three consecutive Heisman Trophy finalist predecessors.
Per multiple sources, Day believed McCord could go into the 2024 as the starting quarterback, but would not explicitly promise him that job earlier this month. McCord, with only one season of eligibility remaining, found a situation where that job is more secure.
“I just don’t think it’s worth getting into it all right now — but I certainly wish him nothing but the best of luck,” Day said. “There are a lot of guys who really care about him a lot.”
McCord’s transfer triggered wide speculation that Ohio State might bring in a quarterback through the transfer portal. However, Day said he is excited about the competition developing between Brown — who will start the Cotton Bowl — true freshman Lincoln Kienholz and incoming freshman Air Noland.
