Josh Allen’s rise from highly anticipated but unreliable rookie to Pro Bowl signal caller has been closely observed by New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

NFL: New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has watched intently as Josh Allen went from being…

Throughout 12 games in his first campaign, Allen completed 52.8 percent of his throws for 2,074 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

While Allen made significant progress in Year 2 and helped lead Buffalo to the playoffs, he still only completed 58.8% of his passes for 3,089 yards, 20 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Allen was selected with the seventh overall choice in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Allen’s third season was a turning point in his career as he was selected to the second team as an All-Pro, placed second in the MVP voting, and received his first Pro Bowl invitation.

Belichick was reminded of one of his own former players, three-time MVP and seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, by this increase in output.

Belichick compared himself to Brady on Wednesday. “After Brady reached a certain stage in 2003, that was essentially how things went for the remainder of his career. In 2002, things weren’t actually like that. That was not the case in 2001. In 2000, it most definitely wasn’t like that.

“From (midseason 2003) on, his level of performance and play and consistency was at the very top of the league.”

Naturally, Brady entered the NFL in a very different manner. He was selected in the sixth round and only appeared in one game as a rookie.

After replacing Drew Bledsoe in 2001, he appeared in 15 games, 14 of which he started, and was selected for the Pro Bowl. Along with winning the Super Bowl, he was named MVP of the game and led the league in touchdown passes in 2002 with 28.

However, Brady reached a new peak in 2003, when he completed 60.2% of his passes for 3,620 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, placing him third in the MVP voting. With a 14-2 record, New England won the Super Bowl.

Brady continued to be terrific after that, and Belichick believes Allen has reached a comparable stage of his career despite having a different playstyle.

“Those quarterbacks, usually when they get to that point, they’re able to sustain it,” Belichick stated. Sometimes it’s just impossible to predict how something will grow. Where he was and where he is at this moment are not really important.

“He’s not too bad. Very nice.”

Although Allen is 5-5 versus the Patriots and has won all five of their meetings in his last seven starts, New England prevailed 29-25 over Buffalo on October 22.

The two parties are now scheduled to meet once more. At 1 p.m. EST on Sunday, Highmark Stadium will host Allen and the Bills (9-6) against Belichick and the Patriots (4-11).

With the comparison to boot, Allen hopes to act Brady-esque by putting on another standout performance. Buffalo needs a win to have any chance of making the playoffs, while New England is attempting to play spoiler.
