Buffalo Bills release veteran offensive lineman Germain Ifedi.

JUST IN:Buffalo Bills release veteran offensive lineman Germain Ifedi…

The Buffalo Bills announced that they have released veteran offensive lineman Germain Ifedi. The move brings their active roster total down to 52, which frees up a spot for defensive tackle DaQuan Jones should he be able to play this weekend.

Ifedi, 29, signed with the Bills at the end of August. He spent the preseason as a member of the Detroit Lions, which released him on August 27. Buffalo signed him three days after his release from Detroit. The veteran did not appear in a game for the Bills this season, as he was a healthy scratch for each contest. The Bills instead went with Ryan Van Demark as their swing tackle.

With Ifedi’s release, the speculation is that defensive tackle DaQuan Jones will be added to the active roster sooner rather than later. The 32 year old was off to a great start this season, notching 10 tackles, 2.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, and five quarterback hits in the first four games of the year. He tore a pectoral muscle in Buffalo’s fifth game, a disastrous outing in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars where the team also lost All-Pro linebacker Matt Milano.

If the Bills think Jones can play this weekend, then they have until 4 p.m. EST on Saturday to add him to their 53-man roster from the injured reserve list. Ifedi, for his part, must clear waivers before the Bills can consider signing him to their practice squad. As a vested veteran, Ifedi would normally be free to sign immediately; however, since it’s after the NFL’s trade deadline, even vested veterans are subject to the waiver process.
