Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes with eye-opening quote on San Francisco 49ers
For the second time in the past five years, Patrick Mahomes will lead his Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl.
The two-time champion will look to hand the 49ers yet another loss once Super Bowl LVIII kicks off in Las Vegas on Feb. 11.
In talking about the upcoming matchup, Mahomes had nothing but good things to say about the NFC champions.
“It’s fun watching their team play,” Mahomes said Tuesday, via The Mercury News. “They’ve been getting after people these last few years. Even though they’ve been through a couple of different coordinators, they have a lot of the same players.”
Mahomes led the Chiefs back from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to a 31-20 win over San Francisco in Super Bowl LIV back in February of 2020.
But a lot has changed for both teams. Chief among them, Brock Purdy will be starting for San Francisco after he put up his best Joe Montana impersonation in a win over the Detroit Lions during Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.

“I knew when we played them that time they were a great team and would probably get back,” Mahomes said. “You never know that you’ll get back. The fact we’re both back in the Super Bowl and playing each other again, it’ll be a great challenge for us.”
Despite Kansas City’s status as the defending champions, the team is currently a two-point underdog against San Francisco headed into the Super Bowl.
A lot of that has do with Purdy starting in this iteration of the big game compared to Jimmy Garoppolo last time around against Kansas City. The sophomore is 4-1 in his postseason career with his only loss coming after being injured early in last season’s NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
As for Mahomes, he’s thrown 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions in six playoff starts over the course of the past two seasons.
