Greg Olsen Calls Out Dan Campbell’s Critics
The Detroit Lions were so close to ultimate glory.
Dan Campbell’s team was 17 points up on the San Francisco 49ers, and their offense was firing on all cylinders in the first half.
The Niners’ defense took a major leap forward in the second half, and the Lions lost all momentum.
Even so, coach Campbell wanted to stay true to his philosophy, taking risks and making bold decisions, sometimes to a fault.
The Lions went for it on fourth down, not once but twice, leaving at least six points on the field by not taking two field goals, and they wound up losing the game.
Needless to say, those decisions prompted plenty of criticism for the young coach.
With that in mind, former TE Greg Olsen took to Twitter to throw a little dart at those who called Campbell out.
“They should have just taken the points,” Olsen posted in response to a tweet remembering the ‘Philly Special” in Super Bowl LII.
He retweeted a clip of the Philadelphia Eagles’ iconic ‘Philly Special’ play from the Super Bowl, stating that they should’ve taken the points instead.
For those who lack context, Doug Pederson decided to go for it on fourth and goal despite being up 15-12 on the New England Patriots, calling a beautiful trick play that helped them gain all momentum in the game.
Truth be told, it’s hard to blame Campbell for sticking to his game plan and doing what helped his team get that far in the first place.
Then again, part of being a coach is being able to read the room and make sound decisions depending on context, and that’s where Campbell could’ve done things a little differently.
