SAD NEWS: Alabama key man Tommy John undergo for surgery .

Alabama sophomore pitcher Riley Quick underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday night in Birmingham, his parents, Wayne and Lynn Quick, confirmed to AL.com.

Quick, 19, started the Crimson Tide’s (4-0) second game of the season against Manhattan. He recorded three hitless innings, walked one and struck out five. His surgery was performed by Dr. E Lyle Cain of Andrews Sports Medicine.

“From what I hear, everything went great, but we’ll be obviously without him the rest of the year, which stinks for him. That kids works really, really hard. But the good news is he’ll get on the road to recovery and we’ll be getting him back before we know it,” head coach Rob Vaughn said after Alabama’s 6-1 victory over Middle Tennessee.

As a freshman, Quick appeared in 16 games, allowing nine earned runs over 22 innings pitched. His first career win came in the Iron Bowl of baseball last spring, logging 3.2 scoreless against Auburn. Quick, a former standout at Hewitt-Trussville, joined the Tide as the No. 6 prospect in the state, according to Perfect Game USA’s rankings. He was named the Alabama Sports Writers Association player of the year in 2022.

His brother, Pierce Quick, played offensive line at Alabama for three seasons from 2019-21. He transferred to Georgia Tech before ending his career last February.

Alabama’s baseball rotation under Vaughn and returning pitching coach Jason Jackson will likely rely on juniors Ben Hess and Aidan Moza. Hess started the home opener while Moza ended the series on Sunday. UA started Greg Farone, a lefty transfer from Louisville, on Tuesday.

The Tide will host Alabama State on Wednesday before hosting Valparaiso for a weekend series.
