Former Seattle Seahawks star K.J. Wright is joining the San Francisco 49ers’ coaching staff.
The former linebacker announced Monday on his podcast that he has accepted a position as the team’s assistant linebackers/defensive quality control coach with the 49ers.
Wright’s acceptance of the position comes after head coach Kyle Shanahan promoted Nick Sorensen to defensive coordinator. Sorensen was an assistant coach with the Seahawks under former head coach Pete Carroll from 2013 to 2020. Wright was a member of the Seahawks during that same time span, giving Sorensen familiarity with the longtime linebacker.
Wright, 35, was a fourth-round pick (No. 99) by the Seahawks in the 2011 NFL draft. He spent his first 10 seasons in Seattle, going to two Super Bowls and winning Super Bowl 48. Wright started 154 of the 159 games he played for the Seahawks, finishing with 1,051 tackles, 15.5 sacks, seven interceptions, 11 forced fumbles, and nine fumble recoveries.
Wright played one season with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021 before he announced his retirement in 2022.
