Former Alabama standout defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson is signing with the Carolina Panthers, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
“The Panthers have agreed to terms with veteran DT A’Shawn Robinson on a three-year, $22.5 million deal, source says,” Garafolo writes. “Following a year with the Giants, Robinson reunites with Ejiro Evero, the former Rams assistant and now DC who pushed for Robinson.”
This transaction stems from the Panthers’ attempts to rebuild a decent chunk of their roster, as they finished with the league’s worst record in each of the past two seasons. Additionally, Brian Burns, Carolina’s best edge rusher, signed with the Giants–Robinson’s most recent team.
The 46th overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft spent the first four seasons of his career with the Detroit Lions before the Los Angeles Rams grabbed him as a free agent. In 2021, his second year with the Rams, Robinson was a major factor in the team’s Super Bowl run, as he finished with 22 tackles in four playoff games and a sack in the big game.
After his contract expired at the end of the 2022 season, the Giants picked Robinson up for a one-year deal. In 17 games (13 starts) this past season, Robinson logged 62 tackles, including six for loss, but New York decided to not extend him.
In 39 games and three years at Alabama, Robinson recorded 133 tackles, including 22 for loss, and nine sacks. In his junior season (2015), he was named a Consensus All-American and a member of the All-SEC First Team.
The 28-year-old becomes the fourth Crimson Tide product on the Panthers, joining quarterback Bryce Young, fellow defensive lineman LaBryan Ray and wide receiver Cam Sims.
Cincinnati Bengals tight end Irv Smith Jr. (81) catches a touchdown pass in the first quarter during a Week 9 NFL football game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals, Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023, at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati.
