The San Francisco 49ers are on the hunt to beef up their offensive line ahead of the 2024 NFL season. With Trent Williams aging, San Francisco may be looking for an heir apparent, even if that player is more of a project.

49ers Find Franchise Tackle in PFN Mock Draft
Pro Football Network’s Keff Ciardello has the 49ers going with an offensive tackle in the first round.

“Still licking their wounds from a Super Bowl loss, the San Francisco 49ers upgrade their offensive line and snag Oklahoma OT Tyler Guyton,” wrote Ciardello.

“Somewhat of a developmental project with little starting experience, he’s a natural pass blocker at 6’7″, 322 pounds, ascending the prospect rankings as of late due to his burst, fluidity, and powerful first punch.”

San Francisco Watches WR Terique Owens’ Pro Day
The Niners have a knack for finding strong skill-position players. Wide receivers Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens, along with running back Christian McCaffrey, come to mind.

Could their relatives become part of the proverbial 49ers family?

NBC Sports San Francisco’s Matt Maiocco reported that the 49ers were in attendance for Missouri State WR Terique Owens’ pro day. Terique, son of Terrell, had a 40-yard dash time of 4.51 seconds, a broad jump of 10 feet, four inches, and a vertical leap of 38.5 inches. The younger Owens measured in at 6’1 7/8″ ahead of his workout.

The former Missouri State wideout posted 28 catches for 528 yards and four receiving touchdowns during the 2023 season. He played 26 collegiate games, making 46 grabs for 765 yards and four touchdowns in three seasons.

In an interview with NFL Draft Diamonds, Owens described himself as a “quiet person.”

“I don’t have a loud personality,” Terique Owens said. “For the most part, I’m fairly quiet, and I keep my head down and work.”

Like his son, Terrell went to a small school, too. He was drafted 89th overall in the 1996 NFL Draft out of Chattanooga by the 49ers. Owens put up gaudy numbers during his tenure in San Francisco — 592 receptions for 8,572 yards and 81 touchdowns. He went on to play for the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills, and Cincinnati Bengals during his Hall of Fame career.

Unlike his son, Terrell Owens had an on-field persona that was larger than life.

Brenden Rice Discussed Potential of Joining San Francisco 49ers
Brenden Rice, son of Jerry, also plays the same position as his Hall of Fame father. He met with the 49ers during the Combine and discussed his connections with the organization with Chat Sports’ Chase Senior.

“It’s super dynamic,” Brenden said on March 1. “You have a whole lot of threats over there. And just to be a part of that offense and knowing that I’m going with guys that are Pro Bowlers and some maybe future Hall of Famers, as well as Brock Purdy — he’s from Chandler, Arizona, my hometown — and competing with him back in the day and throwing with him, it’s a nostalgic moment.”

NFL Network Mocking WR Luke McCaffrey to San Francisco 49ers
“With the 94th pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select … Luke McCaffrey, a wide receiver from Rice University.”

That’s what NFL Network Draft analyst Chad Reuter projected in his latest four-round mock draft. Luke McCaffrey is the brother of Christian and is a jack of all trades. The younger McCaffrey brother played quarterback for the first three years of his career between Nebraska and Rice.

A pivotal decision to switch to his father, Ed’s, old position may have paid off the best for him as a prospect. Luke finished with 15 rushes for 117 yards to go with 71 catches for 992 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in 2023.
