Players were hoping the offense would be able to get going a bit after the majority of their bats were uncharacteristically cold at the same time to start the season. They didn’t quite accomplish that, leaving 12 on base and going 3-11 when runners were in scoring position.

While that was happening, the Phillies’ front office decided to make a trade with the Chicago White Sox that brought in 22-year-old infielder Jose Rodriguez in exchange for cash considerations.

MLB Pipeline had him listed as the White Sox’s No. 17 overall prospect after he put up a career minor league slash line of .283/.323/.446 with 57 home runs, 161 extra-base hits, and 235 RBI.

After the deal, Rodriguez is now Philadelphia’s No. 28 overall prospect.

Chicago had previously designated the infielder for assignment when they needed to open up a roster spot to activate starting pitcher Mike Clevinger.

For the Phillies, this is a low-risk move that helps out their depth at the Triple-A level. If injuries happen to Bryson Stott, Trea Turner, or other infield options on their Major League roster, they now have a player in their pipeline who is ready to make a leap to the next level.

At only 22 years old, there’s not a huge rush for them to promote Rodriguez immediately.

They can continue to develop him and give him every opportunity to potentially turn into a role player at some point during his career.
