“Funny thing, I was actually in a photoshoot. My mentor, he called me and he said, ‘Deuce, you need to hurry up. You’ve got to go to the office.’ Man, I’ve got to take the (Michigan) jersey and stuff off? He was like, yeah. I had to take the jersey off and all that stuff and I went up to coach George (Helow’s) office and that’s where the business happened,” he said after receiving his offer from Helow.
“I loved his vibe,” Spurlock said of Helow. “He’s a real cool coach to be around and he’s going to keep it honest with you on and off the field. If you’re not doing what you’re supposed to be doing on the field, he’ll call you out for it. He’ll make sure you know that you’re in the wrong and he wants to teach you and help you get better. His vibes were just purely focused on wanting you to get better as a person but also wanting to get to know you and wanting to know you more than just having a coach and player type of relationship.”
