Heartbreak: Boston Celtics greatest player of all time has finally announce his leaving due comeback of…
Following their 141-133 double overtime victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night, the Boston Celtics announced that Kevin Garnett’s jersey number would be retired the following season.
Garnett was traded to Boston where he paired up with fellow all-stars Paul Pierce and Ray Allen after having played his first 14 seasons in Minnesota.
The six-year Celtics player was a power forward who won an NBA Championship in 2008.
“I’m grateful and humbled that the Celtics have retired my number. I
Celtics. I will always be very grateful and respectful of ownership, Doc Rivers, Danny Ainge, my former colleagues, and Celtic Nation!” stated Garnett in a release.
Doc Rivers declared before to the game that “he’s the greatest superstar role player ever.” Despite his celebrity status, he managed to fulfill his team’s job in some way. I have no idea how he accomplished that, but he did. He altered this franchise’s culture. He did, in fact. We were in need of someone like that to join the franchise, and he did, and it remains today. It never left after that. Garnett said as much.
“Kevin changed everything for us from the moment he arrived in the summer of 2007,” Celtics player Wyc Grousbeck remarked.
Joint proprietor. His unwavering dedication to victory played a key role in our 2008 title. He is and always will be my all-time favorite Celtic.
The Celtics President of Basketball Operations, Danny Ainge, stated, “Kevin gave everything he had to the team in every practice and game, and his unique blend of energy, intelligence, and talent brought out the best in his teammates and coaches.”
Garnett averaged 15.7 points, 8.3 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game across his eight seasons in the NBA.
In the Garden rafters, Garnett joins Pierce, whose number was retired in 2017–18. He is the organization’s twenty-fourth member to have been awarded this distinction.
