If he is not fired, I will leave the Kansas City Chiefs head coach, as he has a misunderstanding with his player.
A source familiar with the decision informed The Associated Press on Saturday that Chiefs coach Andy Reid was fined $100,000 and quarterback Patrick Mahomes was fined $50,000 for criticizing referees during Kansas City’s 20-17 loss to Buffalo last week.
Since the fines weren’t disclosed, the individual talked under anonymity.
For their remarks over an offside penalty that prevented a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, Reid and Mahomes broke NFL policy prohibiting public criticism of game officials.
On a play where he received a lateral from Travis Kelce and rushed for what would have been the winning touchdown, Kadarius Toney was obviously lined up offside. Reid described the penalty as “a bit embarrassing” for the NFL and said officials often alert players about being offside.
Following his helmet slam on the sideline, Mahomes yelled at referees. The penalty call, in his words, was “elementary school” material.
Travis Kelce acknowledged that his bumping Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid during Sunday’s Super Bowl was “unacceptable” but attributed it to his “passion.”
“It’s definitely unacceptable, and I immediately wish I would have taken it back,” Kelce said on the “New Heights” podcast, which he co-hosts with his Philadelphia Eagles brother Jason Kelce, on Wednesday.
“Coach Reid actually approached me after that, saying, “Hey buddy, I love your passion,” without even using harsh words. As Kelce remembered, “I got cameras on me all over the place, man.”
Recalling his conversation with Reid over the altercation, Kelce remarked, “And we kind of laughed about it.”
Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas had cameras there when Kelce shouted at Reid and seemed to grab his arm in the second quarter.
“Unfortunately, sometimes my passion comes out where it looks like negativity, but I’m grateful that he knows that it’s all because I want to win this thing with him more than anything,” Kelce added.
You crossed a line, Jason told his brother.
“I did,” Travis said in agreement. “I can’t get that stoked to the point where I’m banging Coach, throwing him off balance, and other things. I thought, “Oh, s—,” as soon as he stammered.
Admittedly, the yelling in his face is quite excessive. There must be other ways to approach this retrospectively, Jason remarked.
Yes, I am aware of it. I am a guy with passions. I love Coach Reid; he is aware of my love of playing for him and my love of being, you know, a product of his coaching career. For Big Red alone, I play. I’m out there with him if he leaves this year,” Travis declared.
“We weren’t playing very well, I wasn’t playing very well, and we had to get some s— going,” he added, describing the altercation.
