If he is not fired, I will leave the Denver Broncos head coach, as he has a misunderstanding with his player.
He miscommunicates with his player; hence, if he is not fired, I will quit as head coach of the Denver Broncos.
With their Tuesday firing of Mike Shanahan, the Broncos stunned almost everyone. Three years running, Shanahan’s teams had failed to make the postseason. These last few years, his defenses have been appalling.
The 52-21 thrashing he suffered in what was essentially a playoff game against the Charges was reportedly the last straw for Broncos ownership.
Looking back, I’m not sure we ought to be all that shocked.
With three games remaining in the season, how many head coaches could last without squandering a three-game lead? Few head coaches could make it through three straight years without making the playoffs. How many head coaches in ten years could manage just one postseason victory?
The post-Elway playoff performance by Shanahan is widely known.
The fact is, I’m not convinced head coach Shanahan deserves to be let go. He extracted as much from his players as was possible.
Not that the man lost his coaching skills, really. Bill Belichick calls Shanahan an offensive wizard and extols him.
Shanahan, the general manager, is a different matter entirely.
GM Shanahan believed Jake Plummer and Brian Griese would both be the next John Elway. He was the person who believed Denver would somehow teach the Cleveland Browns’ pitiful defensive line to stop being obese and slothful.
It is he who still needs to learn where to get decent defensive players. It has been years since this guy assembled a defense capable of stopping a running offense.
It was him who ought to have been let go.
Coach Shanahan needs to look no farther than General Shanahan for someone to hold responsible for the way things ended in Denver.
There are no insiders in my network. I simply assume that having a head coach like Shanahan would please any astute owner or general manager.
Fantastic coach Mike Shanahan is. He will succeed, provided he lands under a competent general manager. Simply put, he had to get the hell away from General Manager Mike Shanahan.
