In front of the highest attendance for a professional women’s hockey game in the United States on Saturday night in Detroit, Boston defeated Ottawa 2-1 in a shootout. Hannah Brandt and Hilary Knight each scored goals in the shootout, and Aerin Frankel stopped four of the five shots that she faced.
The game, which featured Ottawa and Boston on the Red Wings’ home floor as part of the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s Takeover Weekend, had an announced crowd of 13,736, which was more than the 13,316 that saw Minnesota win their home opener against Montreal on January 6.
The world record was set by Montreal and Toronto on February 16, when a sell-out crowd of 19,285 attended the Battle on Bay Street at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. The two teams will play on Sunday in Pittsburgh on the Penguins’ home ice.

With seven games left in the regular season, Boston (4-4-2-7) and Ottawa were tied for the fourth and final playoff spot going into Saturday’s game. Both clubs treated the match as though it were a playoff match.
Boston took a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from Knight three minutes into the contest. However, Ottawa responded at the 15:20 mark when Emily Clark beat Frankel with a shot that went just under the crossbar during a power play. In the five-minute extra, neither team managed to score any more goals in regulation.
Early in the game, Ottawa (5-0-6-6) saw two attempts bounce off the crossbar. In the last 30 seconds of overtime, Ottawa captain Brianne Jenner had an open shot over a sprawled Frankel that bounced against the upright.
In the first round of the shootout, neither side scored; however, in the second, Ottawa’s Kateřina Mrázova scored, and Brandt responded to tie the score at one. In the third round, Knight gave Boston the lead after Frankel stopped Savannah Harmon. To secure the victory, Frankel blocked attempts from Jenner and Natalie Snodgrass.
Emerance Maschmeyer and Frankel of Ottawa produced outstanding goalkeeping performances. On 26 shots on goal, both had 25 saves.
