One of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL, Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals, has agreed to a five-year agreement worth $230.5 million, according to a source who spoke with ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schefter was informed by the source that the contract, which is valid until the 2028 season, contains a guaranteed $160 million for injuries. According to the source, Murray will receive a fully guaranteed payment of $105 million upon signing the contract.

Murray’s contract has an average yearly value of $46.1 million, making it the second most in the NFL only to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ $50.3 million. The average yearly value of Patrick Mahomes’ contract with the Chiefs is $45 million, while Deshaun Watson’s with the Browns is $46 million.

Watson’s $230 million fully guaranteed contract with the Browns is the only one in NFL history to have more guaranteed money than Murray’s.

Murray’s five-year deal was formally revealed by the Cardinals on Thursday; however, the specifics were not disclosed. A few of Murray’s teammates, like as standout safety Budda Baker and recently acquired receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, thanked the quarterback on Twitter.

After months of continuous talks, Erik Burkhardt, the agent for Murray, and Steve Keim, general manager of the Cardinals, worked late into Wednesday night to clinch the arrangement, according to Schefter.

Murray, 24, had a contract that was set to expire in 2023 when the Cardinals picked up his rookie contract’s fifth year option in April.

However, Murray’s long-term career in Arizona was called into question earlier this year after he deleted all but two posts from his Instagram page after the Pro Bowl—one from when he was at Oklahoma in 2018 and the other from the Pro Bowl.

Similar to the negotiation timelines that resulted in lucrative deals for other third-year quarterbacks like Mahomes and Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen, Keim stated earlier this year that there was “zero chance” Murray would be traded and hinted that a long-term deal could be finalized at some point during the summer after the organization had a chance to “take a deep breath and sort of refocus” after free agency and this year’s NFL draft.
