Terrible information: Pittsburgh Pirates head coach is suspended following evidence of an affair with his key player’s wife
MLB said on Wednesday that Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Angel Perdomo, who purposefully threw at San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado during Tuesday night’s game, has been suspended three games and fined an amount not yet determined. In addition, Derek Shelton, the manager of the Pirates, received an undisclosed fine and a one-game suspension.
Tuesday night, Perdomo gave up a solo home run to Juan Soto in the seventh inning before hitting Machado in the back with a 98 mph fastball the following pitch. Shelton and Perdomo were removed, and both benches received warnings. This is the video:
Perdomo will start serving his ban on Wednesday after deciding not to file an appeal. He cannot be replaced on the roster, therefore the Pirates will be shorthanded for the next three games. On Wednesday, Shelton will also serve out his ban. The automatic one-game suspension for managers occurs when it is found that a pitcher intentionally pitched at a hitter.
This season, 29-year-old Perdomo has 30 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings pitched and a 3.92 ERA. He has not played in the major leagues since brief appearances with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2020–21.
The Pirates’ July record now stands at 5-15 after Tuesday’s setback (SD 5, PIT). After beginning the season with a 20-8 record, they are now 24-49 and have dropped to last place in the NL Central.
