Tragic news: A crucial player’s retirement was announced by the Seattle Mariners’ head coach because he left his contract to sign a new one.
SEATTLE – After completing his responsibilities as ceremonial first pitch thrower, Nelson Cruz moved to a small stand behind home plate to watch the Seattle Mariners open the season against the Boston Red Sox.
Before Thursday night’s season opening, Cruz was able to officially retire from the Mariners organization by signing a commemorative one-day contract there.
Cruz declared his retirement after the previous campaign. He played in the major leagues for eight different organizations for portions of 19 seasons. The eight seasons he played for Texas early in his career were his longest tenure.

He then proceeded to a small stand set up behind home plate, where he signed a ceremonial one-day contract that would allow Cruz to retire as a member of the Mariners organization before Thursday night’s season opener.
