He is back, The St. Louis Cardinals have just announced the return of their former head coach
Although I didn’t want to leave you without anything to talk about, I think this is a fantastic day for an open thread. And we have something to talk about from yesterday!
The Cardinals and Yadier Molina have reportedly discussed Molina’s return to the team, according to a report from Fox 2’s Sports Director Martin Kilcoyne. Clearly not as a player. nonetheless, in the role of coach.
Molina has experience managing abroad. He has previously expressed his desire to manage in the major leagues. The first step toward making such a transfer would be to join Oli Marmol’s staff with the Cardinals.
This revelation appears to be consistent with a Post Dispatch article by Derrick Goold regarding potential coaching staff additions. These additions might help Willson Contreras and the team’s catchers become more proficient defensive catchers.
Is there anyone—really anyone—that the Cardinals may look to assist Willson Contreras and Ivan Herrera in living up to the team’s lofty standards for the catcher position?
The Cardinals are obviously not prepared to declare just yet, and it appears from Kilcoyne’s reports that both sides are merely considering the possibility. However, it makes logic.
Personally, I would be happy to see some of Yadier Molina’s leadership, ingenuity in game planning, and presence back in the clubhouse. As long as he can get along with the department of analytics. I doubt he will be able to. But in a stats-driven MLB, he will have to if he wants to manage.
