The Boston Red Sox have a Bobby Dalbec problem, as Red Sox Nation has heard before. In May of that year, Dalbec was optioned to Worcester once more as part of a roster maneuver. He’s back to destroying Triple-A pitchers with the WooSox, of course.
On May 18, Dalbec went deep for the WooSox, who won 9–8. In the opening inning of Worcester’s game against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, he launched a two-run shot to left field.
Dalbec’s slash line through 14 games with the WooSox is 220, 328, and 540. He has reached base 12 times, blasted five home runs, and collected eight RBI. He’s off to another solid start in Triple-A, and Worcester’s order really benefits from his hitting.
His inability to adapt it to the major leagues is the issue. In 53 at-bats over 22 games with the big league team, Dalbec managed just seven hits. With just nine total bases, four walks, and four RBIs, he hit zero home runs. That is impressive for a paltry slash line of 132/.207/.170 after over a month of play. Yep, to put it simply,.
Bobby Dalbec, a former Red Sox prospect, is, at most, a Triple-A player.
It has been struggle after struggle for Dalbec ever since that enchanted August of 2021, when it seemed as though he had finally turned the corner and might be an everyday player. Having appeared in 117 big league games, he slumped in 2022. In 2023, he made just 21 appearances for the Red Sox. This year is similar to last.
Despite the challenges faced by Dominic Smith and Garrett Cooper following Triston Casas’s long-term injury, Dalbec hasn’t shown the Red Sox that he is a superior choice over the two. His defense could be superior to Smith’s or Cooper’s, but his bat isn’t up to par.
Since Dalbec has no more minor league options, it’s difficult to avoid thinking that this will be his final season playing for the Red Sox. Though he is well on his way to becoming Worcester’s king, his major-league career in Boston has not gone as planned for the most part.
