Typically, the Dallas Cowboys make one or two bold moves in the offseason to build excitement for the next season. This year, however, the team had a boring offseason and a workmanlike NFL Draft.
Head coach Mike McCarthy is content with the players he currently has on the field and recently made it apparent how he thinks about Trey Lance, his backup quarterback.
McCarthy said of his quarterback, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic: “The athletic ability is top-notch.” We made some adjustments to his (throwing) motion. The timing and improvement are evident. He and I frequently discuss the preseason since it is what we are aiming toward.
Along with Cooper Rush, Lance has also received praise for being “super coachable” during his one year in Dallas. With both backup quarterbacks, Dak Prescott and Lance, entering their final year of contracts, the Cowboys will need to evaluate their options.
Lance showed a lot of promise for the San Francisco 49ers in the preseason last year before the Cowboys acquired him for a fourth-round pick. He hasn’t played in a regular-season game since Week 2 of 2022.
Although the Niners selected Lance third overall in the 2021 draft seems like a long time ago, there was a good reason for that selection.
It’s clear he has skill, and the Cowboys are making every effort to develop it.
