Jameson Williams, a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, has been concentrated since the 2023 season concluded. The group has noticed this as well.
Coach Dan Campbell stated that Williams has made the greatest progress of any Lions player thus far during his remarks at OTAs on Thursday.
“He’s a man with a mission,” Campbell declared. “And I’m just gonna leave it at that.”
Williams is in his third season after being selected 12th overall in the 2022 selection. However, 2024 appears to be his first unrestricted year.
As a rookie, he missed his first 11 games due to an ACL injury he sustained in college. He missed the first four games of the previous season due to a ban he received for breaking the NFL’s gambling rules.
He has the mindset to assist the squad in any manner he can now that he is fully recovered and able to take part in all offseason team activities.
“It does a lot because this is my third year, but it’s really my first year going out there and getting real reps with the ones (starters) and moving around with the ones and getting reps with JG (quarterback Jared Goff) and things like that,” Williams stated. “Moving around, executing flawless splits, and overall feeling at ease. I’m doing all of it for the first time this year, and it feels fantastic to start.”
Williams has improved “everywhere,” according to Campbell, which is encouraging for the Lions, who need him to take on more of a role after losing Josh Reynolds to free agency.
Williams’ speed and ability to be a deep danger were on show in the Lions’ NFC Championship Game defeat to the San Francisco 49ers at the end of the previous season. Williams scored a touchdown both catching and running. He is aware that the secret to realizing his greatest ability will be consistency.
“I’m not under any pressure. “I actually play football,” declared Williams, who attended Ohio State and Alabama for his college career. “I’ve been playing football for a long time, and I’ve participated in some of the largest TV games and events. Since it’s what I do, I never really felt under pressure. I was trained to do this; it’s what I was made to do and what I was born to do. I therefore don’t feel any pressure at all.”
Williams stated that it’s critical to showcase his game’s finer elements and specifics at OTAs. He occasionally performed freestyle on his routes while attending college. He’s paying attention to the details now.
“His toolbox is filled with so many tools. Lions cornerback Carlton Davis III said, “He’s a threat in a lot of different ways. He can beat you running fast.” “So, when you’re going up against a guy like that every day, you have no choice but to get better.”
Williams has shown flashes of his potential in 18 career games, hauling in 25 catches for 395 yards and four scores and gaining 69 yards on four rushes. He is still a work in progress, as seen by the fact that he dropped a deep pass from QB Mark Goff during Thursday’s practice, but he believes he is ready to go, and Lions coaches are sure he can.
“I have a lot of goals in mind. There is more than the sky. I wish to soar far above the clouds. Williams declared, “I want to be the greatest to ever play my position and stuff like that. “Earlier, someone questioned me about my objectives, my thoughts on the game, and other things; that’s where I want to be when I’m through playing.
“So, things like that, just make me feel a little bit better just to go a little harder with a little confidence and a little extra just on my back just push me a little harder.”
