In a news conference held in the arena on Wednesday, G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim and CEO and President of the Phoenix Suns Josh Bartelstein revealed their plans for the new franchise, including the design of their emblem and their home arena.

The process of starting this is labor-intensive. We’re rather pleased with it,” Bartelstein remarked.

The Phoenix Suns were the only NBA team without a G League affiliate prior to the announcement. The Northern Arizona Suns, the team’s previous affiliate, played in the desert for four seasons until relocating to Detroit in 2020.

In July of last year, Mat Ishbia, the owner of the Phoenix Suns and Mercury, hinted at possible plans to bring back a G League franchise. Ishbia clarified that the organization’s top goal was to return a G League franchise to Phoenix in a statement provided to The Athletic.

In keeping with his word, Ishbia’s group formally declared on February 14 that it has acquired a G League franchise, with plans to make their debut in the 2024–25 season.

The organization sponsored a competition to choose the team’s new name shortly after the announcement. More than 12,000 fans submitted name suggestions, with several of them offering the Valley Suns, the team’s selected moniker.
