Since making his Ibrox debut, the goalie has served as Jack Butland’s and Allan McGregor’s backup.
Robby McCrorie declined a new contract offer from the Rangers, and since January, a transfer request has being considered.
The goalie’s lack of first-team experience at Ibrox has angered him. The 26-year-old, whose contract is about to expire, has made it plain to Philippe Clement that he wants to play and is already drawing interest from Aberdeen. Rangers executives presented a revised long-term contract, but it was rejected. The following was revealed by an Ibrox source: “Robby feels he has waited long enough and has heard so many promises from previous managers and coaches; it’s possible that his club loyalty has not helped him.”
“We have made another attempt to convince him to stay by offering to raise his pay in exchange for an extension of his contract, but he is adamant that he must leave in order to pursue his goals. Robby is an incredibly accomplished goalkeeper, and his departure will be felt greatly as he has never let us down. Rangers are fighting to keep him, but he insists he must move on at this point.”
McCrorie is aware that if Jack Butland is the Rangers’ starting quarterback, he won’t be able to play on a regular basis. If Butland were to be sold, Clement would be willing to offer him the gloves and still wants him to stay.
Although they think they have the top two goalkeepers in the nation, the Ibrox team is unable to guarantee McCrorie playing time. He also understands that if he can resume playing, he can rejoin the Scotland team, which is another important aspect for the homegrown talent. In January, McCrorie submitted a transfer request. He never had the chance to go out and prove himself for the Scotland Euro 2024 team.
The Rangers were still vying for glory on many fronts, so Clement was hesitant to grant his request to depart. Rangers also rely on McCrorie as a homegrown rule for European competition. They are very close to signing Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly, a free agent, from the Scotland squad, although they have already let go of Jon McLaughlin.
