A deal involving Brandon Ingram and Dejounte Murray between the Atlanta Hawks and New Orleans Pelicans was suggested by one NBA observer.
The following trade proposal between the Hawks and Pelicans was put forth by Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley:
The deal involves the New Orleans Pelicans sending Dejounte Murray and Clint Capela to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Larry Nance Jr., and the No. 21 pick.
Buckley added, “New Orleans might not want to pay Ingram, but maybe Atlanta would.” The Hawks have long been in need of an impact wing, and it’s possible that they believe he and Trae Young would get along better than Murray did. In addition, they would receive the No. 21 selection to add another prospect or flip in a different trade, along with Nance, a capable backup big man.
Murray may be viewed by the Pelicans as their absent table-setter in the meantime. The 27-year-old earned his first All-Star selection the last time he played as the primary facilitator, averaging 21.1 points and 9.2 assists versus 2.6 turnovers. Additionally, Zion Williamson may find stronger on-court complements in Capela’s length and ability to play above the rim than it has at the center position for New Orleans.
The Pelicans are set to trade Ingram, who has one year remaining on his deal, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report. According to people who spoke with Hoops Wire, New Orleans is considering getting Murray from Atlanta.
In 2023–24, Ingram shot 49.2% from the field, 35.5% from outside the arc, and 80.1% from the free-throw line while averaging 20.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.6 blocks. It will be $36 million for him next season.
In 2023–24, Murray made 78 appearances for the Hawks. His averages were 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.4 steals, 0.3 blocks, and 45.9% shooting from the field, 36.3% from beyond the arc, and 79.4% from the free-throw line.
In July 2023, Murray signed a $114 million, four-year contract deal with the Hawks. Murray’s salary for the upcoming season is $24.8 million.
While neither Nance Jr. nor Capela are All-Stars, they are also hardly scrubs. Both guys are NBA starters with the ability to play both ends of the court.
Over the course of 2023–24, Nance Jr. averaged 5.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.3 blocks. He also shot 57.3% from the field, 41.5% from beyond the arc, and 77.0%. In the last year of his deal, he will earn $11.3 million the next season.
In the last season of his contract, Capela will earn $22.3 million. With a 57.1% field goal percentage and a 63.1% free-throw percentage in 2023–24, the 30-year-old averaged 11.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.6 steals, and 1.5 blocks. His total was 38 double-doubles.
