Georgia football hires Travaris Robinson as new co-defensive coordinator

Georgia has made its second coaching move and it’s another addition to the defense.

Former Alabama cornerbacks coach, Travaris Robinson, has been hired to replace Will Muschamp as the Bulldogs co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.

Robinson will now work alongside fellow co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann. Robinson is also the most recent defensive hire since new secondaries coach Donte Williams was hired.

“We are pleased to announce Travaris Robinson as our new co-Defensive coordinator and safeties Coach,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said. “Travaris has 17 years of college coaching experience, including over a decade in the SEC mentoring some of the top defenses statistically in the NCAA.”

Robinson previously worked with Nick Saban at Alabama before heading to the Bulldogs after Saban’s retirement. This will be Robinson’s first defensive coordinator job since he served as South Carolina’s defensive coordinator from 2016 to 2020 when Muschamp was the Gamecocks head coach. He was also the defensive backs coach at Florida from 2011 to 2014 when Muschamp was the head coach there.

Robinson has served as a defensive backs coach at multiple different locations. Before joining Alabama in 2022, Robinson worked with Miami in 2021 and his alma mater Auburn in 2015 as the team’s defensive backs coach.

Robinson played with Auburn in the early 2000s as a defensive back. In his senior season as a free safety, Robinson was second on the team in tackles with 92 and had four interceptions. Robinson then spent two seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent.

While Robinson steps in for Muschamp, his former head coach will still stick with the Bulldogs. Muschamp will be stepping back into a defensive analyst position — a role he most recently held in 2021 alongside serving as the team’s special teams coordinator.

According to UGA Athletics, Muschamp and his family elected to transition into the role so he could spend more time with his family. His son, Jackson Muschamp, recently graduated from the University of Georgia and his other son, Whit Muschamp, is a freshman quarterback at Vanderbilt.

While Will Muschamp won’t be as involved, the Bulldogs hold onto their coach and add another strong defensive mind. Robinson recently coached projected first-round picks Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion Arnold, alongside freshman standout Caleb Downs and recent transfer Jake Pope — whom he’ll now be reunited with.

“We are excited about the addition of Coach Robinson and his family to the University of Georgia while having the opportunity to retain Coach Muschamp and his family on our staff,” Smart said.
