Real Madrid has confirmed a huge injury blow just hours ahead of a crucial La Liga clash against Girona on Saturday, which will also affect planning for their Champions League meeting with RB Leipzig.
“After the tests carried out today on our player Antonio Rudiger by Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the vastus lateralis of his left thigh,” the club stated, adding that the German’s evolution is “pending.”.
The club didn’t specify how long Rudiger should be out for, but Spanish media expects him to miss at least a further two weeks of action.
This weekend, Rudiger was meant to make his comeback from the thigh knock picked up at Getafe, which caused him to miss the Madrid derby last Sunday.Tchouameni will probably have to partner right-back Dani Carvajal today, while Lucas Vazquez operates out wide.
“Carvajal knows how a centre back has to play and we work on it in training for as long as we can. In the last few games, on a small pitch, Carvajal has always played as a centre-back,” Ancelotti remarked about this possible outcome.
What is also worrying about Rudiger’s relapse is that it leaves Ancelotti with the same dilemma for the Champions League, which Madrid kicks off again against RB Leipzig in the last 16 next week.
At present, center backs Nacho, David Alaba, Eder Militao, and Rudiger are all on the sick list.
