The Memphis Tigers won a conference championship in 2022, which marked the team’s second first-ever decade-long run in the NCAA Tournament after eight years.
The Tigers’ victory over the nation’s top team in Houston to win the American Athletic Conference guaranteed them a spot in the Big Dance. This marks the first time they have participated in the tournament in back-to-back years since their previous drought started in 2014.
Even while Tigers supporters are as optimistic as ever about their team’s prospects of winning the championship, getting to this point wasn’t a given. Memphis Tigers basketball had a lot of highs and lows, but in March 2022, after the team’s 2022 NCAA Tournament exit, word of their NCAA infractions leaked.
The NCAA reported that the Tigers had four Level I and two Level II infractions.

Important contributors leave when accusations are made public
Following the revelation of accusations against the program, a number of important players from the Tigers’ 2022 Tournament run made the decision to depart the team, either through the college transfer portal or the NBA draft.
Prodigious offensive player Jalen Duren entered the draft, and the Detroit Pistons selected him in the first round.
Lester Quinones, who averaged over 27 minutes per game and was a major factor in the NCAA Tournament, decided to take his chances with the 2022 NBA Draft, declaring while still being eligible to attend college, the day before Landers Nolley II, who averaged 9.8 points per game and more than 26 minutes played per game, entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer.
Quinones was chosen by the Golden State Warriors, and Nolley went on to have a stellar season at Cincinnati.
Josh Minott, a draft pick, and Earl Timberlake, a portal, both contributed significantly to head coach Penny Hardaway’s playing time in the 2021–2022 campaign.
