After being wrongfully detained in Russia, center Brittney Griner of the Phoenix Mercury was one of two Comeback Players of the Year winners for the 2023 campaign. She went on to rule the WNBA.
Despite the Mercury having the worst record in the W, Griner started all 31 of her games and showed no signs of slowing down, even after spending the whole 2022 season in a Russian prison. This season, Griner was named to her ninth All-Star squad.
Griner expressed her happiness to reporters during Phoenix players’ exit interviews, saying that she had finished the WNBA season. While many players and supporters might take this accomplishment for granted, Griner did not, considering her ordeal after her arrest in February 2022 for possessing hash oil prescribed by a doctor.
Griner shot 56% from the field in 28 minutes each night, finishing the season with an average of 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Due to wear and tear and a desire to prioritize her mental health, she missed nine games. Given that the Mercury had a terrible season and finished with the second-worst record in franchise history (9-31), her return to form is even more impressive.

In other WNBA news, Breanna Stewart of New York, who had a record-breaking season with the Liberty and set a new league record for points in a season, was voted the AP MVP for 2023.
Defensive Player of the Year was awarded to Las Vegas forward A’ja Wilson, who was selected MVP last year and helped the reigning champion Aces to the best record in the league. Top rookie honors went to Indiana Fever center Aliyah Boston, the first pick in the 2023 draft.
The Phoenix Mercury, who are in their 27th season and have won the WNBA Championship three times thus far, are among the original WNBA teams that have remained in existence since the league’s founding in 1997. The Mercury have been home to many outstanding WNBA players over their franchise’s history, winning championships in 2007, 2009, and 2014. A list of some of the greatest players to wear the jersey may be found here.
