The news was released after, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, he consented to a contract buyout with the Cleveland Cavaliers while he was away from the team.

If Rubio chose to return to playing basketball professionally, Wojnarowski said, it would be in Spain.

When The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Joe Vardon revealed last month that Rubio and the Cavaliers had “begun discussing a potential parting of ways,” it was evident that the two parties were preparing for divorce.

Prior to the trade deadline on February 8, Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports revealed that the Cavaliers intended to make improvements to the club using Rubio’s contract slot.

Despite playing in just 67 games during that time, Rubio spent the previous two seasons in Cleveland. During his brief time with the Cavaliers, he averaged 9.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game.

Rubio was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2009 with the fifth overall pick, and he played seven seasons for the team. He was a player for the Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz as well.

Rubio averaged 10.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 7.4 assists in 698 games over his 12-year NBA career. He also shot 38.8 percent from the field.

Along with his impressive performance for Spain, Rubio won three medals with the national team: a silver in the 2008 Olympics, a bronze in the 2016 Olympics, and a gold at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
